Mandated Reporters

Information on mandated reporters

Virginia Music Teachers Association

What is a mandated reporter?

Virginia law identifies certain professionals, including many educators and others who work closely with children, as mandated reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect. Because music teachers often build long-term, trusted relationships with students, it is important that every VMTA member understand the signs of possible harm, the responsibilities that may apply to their individual teaching setting, and the proper steps for making a report. We encourage members to complete Virginia’s mandated-reporter training, even when it is not specifically required for their position. Some portions of the training address difficult and emotionally challenging subjects, but that knowledge is worth pursuing: it can help teachers respond calmly, responsibly, and compassionately when a child may need protection. Members should consult the Virginia Department of Social Services or a qualified professional for guidance concerning their specific legal responsibilities.
