Virginia Music Teachers Association

The Virginia Music Teachers Association (VMTA) brings together music educators from across the Commonwealth—and from neighboring states—who believe in the power of excellent teaching, lifelong learning, and professional community.

Our members teach in independent studios, schools, colleges, universities, and conservatories. We work in different settings, teach different instruments, and serve students of every age and ability. What unites us is a shared commitment to strengthening music education and supporting the people who make it possible.

Through conferences, festivals, competitions, professional development, and collaboration, VMTA gives teachers opportunities to exchange ideas, explore new approaches, and stay connected to the evolving world of music education. Our students benefit, too, with meaningful opportunities to perform, compete, grow, and share their musicianship.

Founded in 1964, VMTA is the Virginia affiliate of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). Established in 1874, MTNA is the nation’s oldest professional organization for music teachers and has spent more than 150 years advancing the quality of music teaching, performance, and understanding throughout the United States.

Membership in VMTA is open to all music teachers. By joining VMTA and MTNA, educators become part of a statewide and national network dedicated to professional growth, musical excellence, and the belief that none of us has to do this work alone.
